“I have the consolation of having
remained an honest man amid the darkness and the atmosphere of crime. I have fought
for the defense of order, in the name of justice, as soldiers fight for the defense of
their country, beneath the flag of their regiment. I had no epaulettes, but I ran as
many risks as they, and I exposed my life everyday as they do.”

Francois Vidocq

International Vidocq Society
Not Affiliated with the Vidocq Society - Philadelphia
The International Vidocq Society (IVS) was formed to improve communication and to expand
the networking of those within the investigative and law enforcement related fields.
Exclusive membership into the IVS is limited to licensed or certified private
investigators, law enforcement officers and security related professionals. All of
these professions should rely on a network of other professionals to truly achieve
professionalism. The barrier needs to be broken between public and private policing.
Although their has long since been dissention between public and private sector of law
enforcement, the IVS aids in bridging those gaps so that both can work together
seamlessly which will aid in overall crime prevention.
Each applicant is
thoroughly screened and must be voted into this fraternal organization by the senior
members based on the applicants, training, experience and merit. Unfortunately not all
who apply are accepted to the International Vidocq Society and this is generally based
on the better good and reputation of the organization.
While the International
Vidocq Society is recent by comparison, our membership is growing at a dramatic rate,
and the principals involved in this organization are recognized experts within their
field and have decades of experience.
Upon acceptance to the IVS, you will
receive a personal identification card and wall certificate that will enhance your
place of business and let everyone know that you have membership within the
International Vidocq Society.
Who Was Eugene Francois Vidocq? And why is he so
important to the Society?
The International Vidocq Society was founded on the
historical teachings of a great detective named Eugene Francois Vidocq. Throughout the
colorful history of private investigations, there have been numerous legends of
citizens’s taking it upon themselves to fight crime, in a splendid number of ways;
most of these stories were fictionalized accounts of real people. By far, the most
fascinating of all these real people was Vidocq. Vidocq a Nineteenth Century
Frenchman, who at one time was a wanted criminal, utilized his knowledge of the
criminal underworld to create a whole new, formalized entity called “criminal
investigations.” In doing so, Vidocq brought fighting crime to a higher level into a
social science. Vidocq is credited with not only starting the first private
investigation offices, but also, starting the first record keeping card index system
for criminal investigations, he was the first to make plaster of paris casts of foot
and shoe imprints. Vidocq was also master of disguise and surveillance. Vidocq held
patents on indelible ink and unalterable bond paper. His first private investigation
firm inspired world-class authors to borrow his brilliance to embody their fictional
heroes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes is much based on Vidocq. Although,
crowning his triumphs, was Vidocq’s value for his fellow man. He was a philanthropist,
who helped the poor and abandoned of Paris. He lived by a code. Not only was he
aggressively pursuing the guilty criminals, he was concerned with freeing the
innocent.
As professionals in the industry we have much to learn from the
teachings of Vidocq. We abide by the laws of Vidocq and understand as a society that
the careers we have chosen will both convict the guilty and free the innocent.
We understand that we will do everything within our powers to ensure that we do not
assist in the conviction of an innocent person. The International Vidocq Society is
sworn to uphold a code. This code was the focal point for one great detective. Codes
that will help ensure that criminal investigations serve their purpose of convicting
the guilty and freeing the innocent. We understand that in order to accomplish and
adhere to this code that our investigations might take a little longer to complete.
However, this is the code of all IVS members and it is the code that sets our members
apart from every other organization. True professionalism is earned. Take the
opportunity to join in the IVS and help us set the bar of professionalism to a higher
level. Your IVS membership will let others know that you have committed to performing
investigations to the highest level possible.
As a member of the International
Vidocq Society you must be willing to work a “pro-bono” case in an effort to solve.
Cases are accepted and evaluated through the IVS based on several eligibility factors.
The clients who submit these special cases are either not financially able to afford
the services of a traditional private investigator or because of the high profile of
their matter. Cases accepted on the pro-bono level will generally be looking into the
injustices of a criminal case or assisting in locating a missing/endangered child.
Members must agree to work one pro-bono case annually when applicable and agreed upon
mutually a set number of hours.
To request an application to the International
Vidocq Society please return to the home page and go to the contact us portion and
